Pension-Gate: The lies behind Governor Christie

The New Jersey Police & Fire pension problems are making the headlines again, this time with Governor Christie using the pension fund payment he promised to make being used instead to cover an $807 million state budget shortfall.  Of course this is nothing new to current and retired members in the Police & Fire pension system.  This is just one more time that the Governor has made these members seem like the reason the state is in such a financial mess.   Once again, Governor Christie has deflected blame from the real reason for the pension mess.

For the non-government workers reading this, imaging if you would that you had a 401k program where you worked.  You made payments into this retirement fund, and your employer made matching payments.  This money is for your retirement, and you spent your career relying on it to support yourself and family once you retire.  Years go by, and your 401k plan is looking good; really good.  Now imagine if you would that your employer decided that they wanted to pay for a totally unrelated program or project, and decided, without telling you, that they used your 401k to pay for it.  When you do take note of the “withdrawal”, you are told “don’t worry, we will put it back”, but they never do.  In fact, not only to they not put it back, but they stop making the matching payments.  And to top it off, they blame YOU, and tell you that you need to put in more money.  Sounds idiotic, doesn’t it?  This is what your government has been doing for years.

Remember the Enron scandal?  When discrepancies were first discovered, the CEO Jeffrey Skilling verbally attacked the Wall Street analyst who questioned “unusual accounting practices” in an attempt to distract from the fact that Skilling knew exactly what was going on.  Governor Christie, our CEO, is verbally attacking the Police & Fire pension union and members in an attempt to distract the public from the fact that he and his predecessors are to blame.  This should be called “Pension-gate” to go along with bridge-gate.

I was a police officer for 25 years, and always made my pension payments; first paying 8.5% of my yearly salary into the pension system, and then later, when the governor changed the amount, I paid 10% into the pension system.  All the while, the state and municipalities were supposed to be making the same payments.  We all know these matching payments were not paid as required by law.

To see where this pension fund disaster began, we need a short history lesson.  Governor Christie did not start this mess, but he continues to perpetuate the revolving door of politicians who systematiclally raid our pension fund to pay for other shortfalls.  I place the blame squarely on the shoulders of Governor Whitman for starting this fiasco.  When she was elected to lead our state, the pension fund was well funded with over 100 billion dollars.  Yes, billion; with a B.  This was our money, and not funds allocated for any other resource.  Governor Whitman began taking money from this pension fund without so much as asking.  She simply took it to pay for various items, including balancing the state budget.  The pension fund was so well funded that she permitted the state and municipalities to stop making their required matching pension payments, but she did not permit the members; the men and women it was meant to help, to stop making their payments.  Billions of dollars were not paid into the pension system by the governments, but like good little soldiers, we kept making our 8.5% payments without missing a beat.  The government payments which were “deferred” were supposed to be made up later.  Smart towns realized this and put money away in something like an escrow account, to be used to make the payments later.  Most towns did nothing except to use that money for other purposes, leaving themselves open for future problems when they had to repay the money.  Who do you think the government blamed when they were eventually told to make their payments?  They blamed the pension fund and the members of the unions of course.

Governor Whitman was not the only one to raid the pension fund.  Each and every Governor has followed suit, including Governor Christie.  The pension raids were done routinely, causing the fund to dwindle.  Governor Corzine was the one who told the towns it was time to put back the deferred payments.  The towns that did not prepare for this day were in for sticker shock.  They now had to make up the missed payments to the tune of billions of dollars collectively.  Towns couldn’t afford to make the payments if they failed to sock the money away, so the only way to raise the money was to raise taxes. Who did they blame for this?  They blamed the pension system; the evil and despicable police and fire union members who diligently made their payments while the municipalities were given a temporary reprieve.
Governor Christie, you are a bold faced liar.  When you first ran for office, you made a promise to the Police & Fire union IN WRITING because you wanted our vote. The unions backed you after you published this letter:

Let me quote Governor Christie.  “It is a sacred trust.  Nothing will change for the pension of current officers, future officers or retirees in a Christine Administration”.  Governor Christie put this in writing and published it for the world to see.  He did this to gain the support of a block of voters, and it worked.  We believed in him and supported him based upon a lie. He lied to us then and he is lying to you now.

  2. I'm shocked that nothing has happened besides the fat boy making the public believe the pension and members are at fault. This should be much bigger than bridge-gate, and there should be heads rolling over the loss of billions of dollars at the governments hands.

  7. This is not news to me, but I'm so discouraged that nothing is being done to fix this problem. Teachers have also been affected by Whitman's actions. The NJ government has been systematically stealing people's money - robbing Peter to pay Paul and make themselves look good. I'm really sick of hearing about this...let's DO SOMETHING!

  13. He has done the same with the teachers. Almost to the word of your letter he promised in his last election cycle that he would not touch the teachers' pensions.
How anyone could vote for this liar is beyond me. I hope the Feds will nab him on the bridge gate and toss him out of government by imprisoning him.

  16. A former California governor and the State Legislature at the time tried to halt payments to the CalPERS retirement system...and they got metaphorically slapped up-side the head by lawsuits. They had to put the money back. Hint, hint.

Contributions by pension sponsors (and employees) are supposed to be made even when systems appear to have excess funding. Actuarial reports depend on this when making projections over the long term (employees' careers + retirees' lifespans after work). To take pension "holidays" just precipitates future disasters when investment returns fluctuate downward and suddenly there aren't enough assets to cover the liabilities.

  31. It's a sad situation and one that should create mistrust of government. My only disagreement is the corzine comment. He was no better on this topic and that should be made clear. I would also take issue with the comparison to a 401k. Private and public companies abandoned pensions long ago in favor of 401ks. It's also no secret that many companies only minimally contribute to employee 401ks these days. Some not at all. So to fix this you are asking taxpayers to pony up a lot of money whrn thier own retirements are in jeopardy. While it was certainly not your fault it also wasn't the average taxpayers fault. I gave credit to Christie for trying to take this on but obviously he has come to realize it's a no win situation. Still he gave his word and needs to be held accountable for that.

  32. Um, it is the exact same thing more than one governor did to us, NJ teachers, as we had overfunded our pension. When the spotlight fell on Christy to pay it back, he villafied us and, I believe, called us demon seed or spawn. Nice guy. Glad I came into this career 27 years ago making $18,500 with a college degree but didn't mind because of my benefits. Now my salary is less every year. Does it happen in other professions? Villafication? Lies? 1/2 of your benefits taken away? No raise? In one lifetime? A lifetime I dedicate to my students? Sad. Just sad.

It's part of the scheme to undercut retirement plans, SS, and the social safety net.

  41. The sanctions sought against Jon Corzine (shown), the former head of MF Global, by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in a lawsuit filed in U.S. Southern District Court in New York on June 27 should end Corzine’s career as a Wall Street manipulator and send him into ignominious oblivion.

In the 47-page filing by Steven Ringer, a CFTC attorney, the charges against Corzine (and his co-conspirator, Edith O’Brien, who, as assistant treasurer of his firm, aided and abetted the theft) include violating the sacrosanct rule against using customers’ funds for the firm’s own purposes. In this case, wrote Ringer:

MF Global … on the brink of failure and in desperate need of cash to survive, invaded its customer funds and violated these fundamental customer protections on a scale never previously seen in the U.S. futures markets, harming thousands of people….

Jon Corzine, the Chief Executive Officer … is legally responsible for MF Global’s misuse of customer money. Edith O’Brien, MF Global’s Assistant Treasurer, is also liable. I met both men and Corzine was no man I would associate with. He shook hand like a dead fish and when I asked him the difference between being a Us Senator and the CEO of Goldman Sachs, his answer was," in the Senate, I can't tell anyone what to do", In later years I met Christie and my Nephews funeral wake in Colonia. He was a US Marine, Killed in action in Afghanistan. He comforted and spoke individually to each family member, when my time came, he grabbed me by the shoulders, probably because he saw my 25 year pin, for serving as a NJ Paramedic. His tears were real and his handshake was like a real man. Barry, Medic 386, retired

  42. What we CAN do is support a constitutional amendment that will REQUIRE quarterly payments into our pension funds.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Whitman was not the 1st governor to raid our pensions it actually started with the Florio administration. And to add insult to injury when Christie raised our contribution from 8.5% to 10% not 1 cent of that extra 1.5% has gone into our pension system the Christie administration has funneled it all into the state general fund. They are all criminals and should be in jail

What's been happening under Christie and his predecessors is an outrage that's occurring at the federal level as well. This practice will begin spreading more and more as governments get desperate to cover debts. This is only the beginning.

I argued with my PFRS coworkers that he was lying, but I got the impression they thought that perhaps their pension was more respected than mine and Christie was going to give them special treatment. I thought we should be joining together to protect the system. I hate that I was right and they were wrong.
